Grand Opening: Olympia Woodland Trail, Phase I, August 7, 2007!

If your schedule allows, please join us in celebration of this event.  We look forward to seeing you on the trail from now on; it's ready!!

This Sunday, May 1 2005, at 9 AM, we will celebrate WTGA's Third Annual Scotchbroom Conga Line!  Tools -- including some very effective means of removing "Scotch Broom" or "Scot's Broom" -- will be provided.  This non-native, invasive plant is a threat to the 1,000+ trees we have planted in recent years.  Help us protect those young Western Red Cedar, Douglas Fir, Western Hemlock, and Red Alder trees.  Added to many existing trees along the trail, they complete the forest and enhance the experience for all.

Hard work for some, light work for others, and fun for all.  Prizes awarded for most creative use of scotch broom as a decoration.  Please come and help!

We’ll provide snacks and gloves.  Dress for rain.  We’ll see you there!  Click on this for a map of where to meet.  We will start at Site 1, just to the left from parking area, and move on to Sites 2 and 3.

Thurston County has completed construction on a bridge over I-5 to connect the North and South segments of the Chehalis Western Trail (CWT).  This project will ultimately include bridges across Martin Way and Pacific Avenue.  The CWT bisects the Woodland Trail just South of Pacific Avenue.  This project was the result of hard work, persistence, and cooperation on the part of many trail advocates, staff members and elected officials.  Great job!

The Pavers are coming; the pavers are coming!!

Phase I construction will start mid-October (2006).  This section of the Trail will be closed to the public.  The contractor will fence the trailhead area at its intersection with Eastside Street and also at its intersection with Wheeler Street.  Construction of the trail should be complete within 90 calendar days and trailhead facilities should be complete within 180 calendar days.

This is exciting news -- trail improvements that many people have been working towards for years!!  Meanwhile, enjoy the trail before the work commences!

Please check back for more details, as they become available.

After several work parties, and with great assistance from Olympia Volunteers in Parks, the interim trail corridor from Eastside to Dayton Sts. is now a year-round recreation and nature trail!  Hundreds of native trees have been planted, the trail has been maintained free of litter, street crossings improved, boundary and utility surveys performed, and dozens of community members have now had a hand in ownership of the OWT greenway!  Trail volunteer projects and events sponsored by the WTGA, in partnership with WSDOT and Olympia Volunteers in Parks will continue throughout 2007.  Sign on as a Woodland Trial steward by calling Jack Horton at 956-1743.

Woodland Trail Volunteers:

Great news!  Last night, the Olympia City Council decided to purchase the D’Miller Lake parcel.  This lake access will be a wonderful addition to the natural environment of the trail.

Come to the work party to see it!

Last Saturday we made major improvements to the Boulevard Rd trail entrance.  Thanks for making that event a success!

This Saturday, April 9, at 9 AM, we will be installing mulch mats on the rest of the trees to get ready for the summer drought. This is light work, no heavy lifting!  But there are lots and lots of trees, so please come and help!

****News Headlines -- Spring 2005****

Proposed D'Miller Lake Park on the Woodland Trail.

Please Support usAttend the Olympia City Council Meeting, 7:00 pm Tuesday April 5, 900 Plum Street.

D'Miller Lake is adjacent to the the Woodland Trail in the center of Olympia.

This property is home to a wide variety of bird and animal life.  Otters and Muskrats come and go.  At least one Porcupine lives on the north side of the lake. The lake provides habitat for Wood Ducks, Quail, Blackbirds and more.  Read more information and view a great aerial photograph.

It is time to save this parcel before it's too late!  It can be just another private development, or a jewel along the Greenway for us all to share.
